Futurist Weaponry, Pioneering Tactical Game-Play and great map design, it is with a heavy heart we say good by to Ghost Recon : Phantoms.
In 2012, an amazing game (of which we thought would hit success within the esports world) was released, It went by the name ‘Ghost Recon Online’ and was soon renamed to Ghost Recon Phantoms, but unfortunately 2 years later, we say goodbye to this glorious game as Ubisoft shut down their servers.
What is Ghost Recon Phantoms?
The game has three classes: Assault, Recon, and Support. It has a team-based gameplay, so each of these classes synergizes with one another. The Assault is played as a suppressor that can charge its way in, the Recon can outflank enemies using a cloak device or snipe by using a scanning device, and the Support can manipulate the battlefield by generating an electronic shield or causing a temporary blackout.
There are four match types: Private Match, Team Capture, Team Death match, Clan Match and three game modes: Conquest, Onslaught, and Holdout.
The Missed Opportunity
With the game holding so much potential for a competitive scene with tournaments, Ubisoft failed to address and support the community by offering a truley competitive scene. I still think to this day this amazing game, would have made a truley amazing Esport, it has the indepth game-play needed to succeed, it is easy to pick up, but hard to master and would have been able to offer some brilliant production in regards to spectating.
Due to this lack of support for community led tournaments and competition the game was unable to thrive and find the audience it truley deserved.
So it with a heavy heart, we lay down our Weapons and salute to those phantoms who have fought over the past 4 years.
A seize fire has been forced upon us by Ubisoft themselves, Farewell Phantoms.
